Mark's Taillight with Standlight

Mark Vande Kamp's custom standlight taillight. I helped him with the taillight electronics and housing. Hahn Rossman helped him with the switch and machining involved there. It is a very slick setup and looks great. Brightness wise it is much brighter than a Seculite while riding, but dimmer when stopped. The standlight circuit is very simple and doesn't make the best use of the supercap. When going there are 10 LEDs at full brightness, when stopped there are 2 at about half brightness.

This photo gives away many secrets. You can see the switch well and how it still works with the starnut. The wire comes up the side and goes to the switch. The switch is held in place with a O-ring and that fits into a groove in the switch well. Design and work by Mark Vande Kamp and Hahn Rossman.

  • All assembled.
  • Homemade taillight with standlight.
  • It's been an hour since Mark got here and the standlight still has a very faint glow (not enough to be useful, but enough to tell us that it still works). Only those two LEDs are powered by the supercap. Since it lasts this long I bet we could have run it with 4 LEDs powered by the supercap for additional brightness.

  • This shot shows the hidden bolt that holds the light to the frame. There is a hole under the bolt for wrench access, that will be filled with a small set screw.
  • Teaser of a taillight that Mark Vande Kamp and I built. The blue thing is a supercap that keeps two of the 10 LEDs on when the bike is stopped.
  • Almost together. Mark ran out of time, finish shots will come later.
