Handlebar Bags

Four handlebar bags that I own. All are pretty uncommon.
Acorn Boxy Bag -- This one is pretty similar to most classic French handlebar bags. It is made from cotton duck.
Ravenna Bag -- Rory had 10 of these made by a Seattle-area seamstress last year. It is styled like a French handlebar bag, but significantly larger. I can fit my (small) laptop into it for commuting. This bag is made from nylon packcloth and is very light considering it's size.
Freight Baggage Pass and Stow Bag -- This bag was made by Freight Baggage for Pass and Stow. It is built like a messenger bag, but is designed to fit onto mid-sized porteur racks. It has the highest volume and is the comfortable to carry on or off of the bike. It is secured to the rack with special snaps.
Ortlieb Bike Basket -- Has it's own cool mounting system that is easy to adapt to most racks.

The Ravenna Bag and Acorn Boxy Bag both fit onto the rack shown in the first few photos.

  • Acorn bag mounted on my bike. The handlebars are 44cm wide Nitto Soma bars.
  • My mounting system which uses Ortlieb hooks. The strap around the rack's backstop keeps the bag from tilting forward.
  • Side view. There are side pockets for thin objects (bus pass, map, etc)
  • The rear pockets are a good size for a digital camera or cellphone.
  • I made a bag stiffener using an Obama '08 sign. Acorn added velcro tabs to secure the stiffener for me. The 4 bolts hold the Ortlieb hooks.
  • Ortlieb hook placement on the bottom.
  • Size comparison. Acorn on the left, Ravenna in the middle, Freight Pass and Stow bag on the right.
  • Side comparisons. The Freight Pass and Stow bag is much deeper than the Ravenna bag, which is in turn deeper than the Acorn.
  • Rear pocket closed on a Ravenna bag. It is holding a 700x40 tube (for size comparison).
  • The Acorn bag's rear pockets. The same tube is in there.
  • Bottom hook placement on the Ravenna vs the Acorn gives you some idea of their relative depths. The Ravenna is about 2" deeper.
  • This gives you a comparison of their relative heights. The Ravenna is about 2" taller.
  • The Freight Pass and Stow bag only has two pockets. One huge one, one still large one.
  • The straps can hook to the bottom when the bag is overfull.
  • Or they can hook inside when you aren't using full capacity.
  • Compression straps on the side to compress the bag when not using it's full capacity. You can also see the shoulder strap here. It is the best of the bunch, I can comfortably ride while carrying this bag on my back (like a messenger bag). It is mounted to the corner instead of centered along the top.
  • Depth comparison between the Ravenna and Freight bags. Note that they are close to the same height, the Ravenna bag looks taller because it is sitting on Ortlieb hooks.
  • This detail shows how the Freight Pass and Stow bag mounts to the rack.
  • The Pass and Stow bag with a small/average sized load. You can also mount the bag the other way around (so that it opens towards the rider) for access while riding.
  • Ortlieb mounting hardware. You can just the distance between the sets of hooks. Sadly you can't rotate this 90 degrees (the mounting pattern isn't square)
